NOLA.COM: Studio Appears Serious About Moving ‘Breaking Dawn’ Production to Louisiana

Two new developments arrive this morning related to the whisperings that Summit Entertainment is considering shooting the next film in the “Twilight” series (which may actually be two films) somewhere in Louisiana.

‘One of them doesn’t say a whole lot. The other, however, seems to be significantly more telling as to exactly how serious Summit Entertainment is about moving the production here.

First, Summit this morning (Monday, May 17) responded to my inquiry of last week for comment on the rumors, first reported in a story in The Hollywood Reporter that relied on an unnamed source for its inside information.

The studio’s statement came a few days too late for my story — which ran in Saturday’s editions of The Times-Picayune — and it was unsuprisingly vague. Here’s it is, in its entirety: “No details have been confirmed regarding ‘Breaking Dawn’ aside from the fact that Bill Condon will be directing.”

Insert shrug here.

The second, more telling, development comes in the form of incorporation papers filed last week with the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office by an agent for Summit and establishing a new corporate entity called “TSBD LOUISIANA, L.L.C.” — which would seem to stand for “Twilight: Saga Breaking Dawn.”

Of course, filing incorporation papers is a long way from booking soundstages and crewing up — but as early signs go, it’s a good one that there might be truth to these rumors.

“Twilight: Breaking Dawn” would be based on the fourth book in the popular vampire-romance series, and there has been talk that it could be broken into two movies. Summit is hoping to beging production this fall.

Confirmed: Breaking Dawn Will Be Split Into Two Films

“I have this from several sources, and it’s definitive. Filming on the back-to-back movies would begin in mid-October, and Summit Entertainment is looking at “high-end” directors. Breaking Dawn is the longest in Stephenie Meyer’s 4-book series lengthwise and it’s the most graphic — presenting birth, attempted murder, death, and of course vampire bites. Published on August 2, 2008, it has a happy ending for most of the characters. Divided into 3 parts, the 1st and 3rd sections are told from the point of view of Bella (Kristen Stewart), and the second section from the perspective of Jacob (Taylor Lautner). It prominently features all 3 favorite characters including Edward (Robert Pattinson). Summit Entertainment no doubt will save money by making these Twilight Saga movies #4 and #5 back to back. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (who’s written all the Twilight Saga films) is currently adapting Breaking Dawn. Eclipse, the 3rd movie, will be released on June 30th.”Source: Nikki Finke – Deadline Hollywood

SM Update: Stephenie Adresses Breaking Dawn Gossip

January 12, 2010

Just a quick note on the subject of the Breaking Dawn film: there is no drama over whether the book should be one movie or two. My personal feeling is that it would be very difficult to cram the whole story into one movie (as I’ve said in many interviews previous to this), but if a great way of doing that surfaces, I’m all for it. Two or one, whichever way fits the story best is fine by me, and everyone I’ve spoken with at Summit seems to feel the same way. We’re all excited to move forward on this, and we are slowly and surely getting there. I know people are anxious for news, and so sometimes gossip get fabricated to stir things up, but there’s no basis to this particular story.

Breaking Dawn Could Begin Shooting This Fall

“Wyck Godfrey, the producer of all the films in the “Twilight” saga, admits that the creative team still doesn’t know how they’ll handle the character [Renesmee] in the “Breaking Dawn” movie, but said that the plan is absolutely for the production to go forward — as either one or two installments — with an eye toward beginning to shoot in Vancouver this fall. All three stars are signed for “Breaking Dawn,” he said, meaning that Stewart and Pattinson will be dealing with the joys and woes of interspecies parenting and newly minted heartthrob Taylor Lautner will return as often-shirtless shape-shifter Jacob Black.
At the moment, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who’s penned all the “Twilight” movies, is working on the “Breaking Dawn” script(s). “It’s a work in process,” Godfrey said in an interview Friday. “The issue [of whether there will be one or two movies] is not going to be resolved until we get the full treatment and see whether it’s organic. If it’s not organic, I don’t think it will be done, and if it is, it will be. It really has to do with how much level of detail from the books there is, with all of these new vampires that appear in ‘Breaking Dawn,’ the whole section about Jacob… It’s a very long single movie if it does become a single movie.”
